A popular joke in the United States of the late 1980s
depicted Iran as a country that had for long
generated substantial troubles for successive U.S.
administrations. A U.S. President, so the joke went,
had his State Department tasked with bringing him
the U.S. government file on Iran. The Department
was unable to find the Iran file under the letter “I.”
The President asked that the search be conducted
under the letter “P” for Persia, Iran’s pre-1933 name.
As the second search also failed, confusion set in the
White House whereupon an advisor suggested that
perhaps Iran had been filed under the letter “U,” to
which the President asked what it stood for. The
reply: Ulcers...

The Middle East Institute holds its 60th Anniversary
Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., Nov. 13-14,
at the National Press Club.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman will give
the keynote address at 9 a.m. Nov. 13. Karen Koning
AbuZayd, comissioner general of the UN Refugees
Relief Works Agency will address the conference
banquet at 7 p.m.
MEI's annual conference, "New Approaches to
Enduring Issues," offers a frank review of the threats
and challenges facing the region and takes a look at
some innovative ways to address them. Panels on
Nov. 13 and 14 include: Exiting Iraq; Afghanistan,
Pakistan and Regional Stability; Improving Relations
Between the International Community and Iran;
Engaging Political Islam; Making Peace in Sudan;
America's Partnership with the Gulf; and Israel's
Evolving Foreign Policy.

interrelated goals of the American Iranian Council
are:

To serve as a platform for sustained dialogue on U.S.-
Iran relations.
2. To serve as a catalyst to educate all Americans,
including Iranian-Americans, regarding this
dialogue.
3. To serve as a forum for discussion of issues of
importance in Iranian society.
