  • Interview with Dr. Shireen Hunter on US-Iran Relations

Dr. Amirahmadi: Today is February 16, 2006. This is Hooshang Amirahmadi, speaking with Dr. Shireen Hunter at her office in Washington, D.C., at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University.

Shireen, thank you for accepting our invitation to speak with us at the American Iranian Council. This interview will most likely be published twice, first online in AIC Update, and then later in AIC Insight. Shireen, you have been on the board of the American Iranian Council for a long time. You were a founding member of the American Iranian Council, and you have been party to nearly every event we have organized. You have also been a constant observer of US-Iranian relations for many years. More recently, you have shifted your focus to Islam, because it has become very critical to understand Islam in order to understand Iran and what is going on in rest of the Middle East today...

Science, Religion, and the Bomb - William Grassie

I want to thank the organizers and sponsors of this First Iranian International Congress on Religion and Science. Many years and a lot of hard work brought us to this event. Much study and thought has gone into preparing the many wonderful lectures. Thank you also for your gracious hospitality in hosting us. I hope there will be many more such opportunities in the future to listen and learn from each other.

Concurrent with the planning of this Congress has been a growing conflict between Iran and the West about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, not to mention the US invasion of Iraq on the pretext of finding weapons of mass destruction. And so I want to address some of these sensitive political and military issues with you today, because science and religion also are also involved in these debates about international relations and military power. In the history of nuclear armaments, science and religion intersect in multiple and profound ways...

Iran in the Israel-Lebanon Crisis - Keyvon Afshari

In the ongoing Israel-Lebanon crisis, Lebanon’s infrastructure has suffered severe damage, and officials estimate that as many as 800,000 people have been displaced within the country. More than 380 Lebanese and 42 Israelis have died over nearly two weeks of conflict in Lebanon, which began after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross- border raid on 12 July.

Secretary Rice recently paid a surprise visit to Beirut on Monday (July 24th) and is now visiting the Palestinian-controlled territories to reassure both groups that America is sympathetic to their suffering, even though it has stopped short of pressuring Israel to let up on its campaign to root out militants. “It is time for a new Middle East,” Rice said. “It is time to say to those that don't want a different kind of Middle East that we will prevail. They will not.”...
