America’s Real Iranian Friends - Mohammad Arasi

Mr. President, in the incessant psycho-political war that has started in the name of preventing the Islamic Republic of Iran from obtaining nuclear bombs, there are individuals and groups among the Iranians residing in the US who, while pretending to be friends and well-wishers of the United States, are resorting to all means at their disposal, including mixing truths and lies, to drag the United States into an all-out war with Iran in order to achieve their own individual and collective objectives. Ramin Jahanbegloo Arrested

The Iranian scholar, Ramin Jahanbegloo, was arrested in Mehrabad Airport in Tehran last week upon his arrival from India. Ramin holds dual Iranian and Canadian citizenship, which is allowed by the Iranian government.

Ramin Jahanbegloo holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Political Science from Sorbonne University. He has written books in English, French and Persian on philosophy and political science, along with articles about Iranian political development.

The Iranian authorities have not yet announced any official details on his detention, but news from Tehran suggest that his charges might include “espionage” for an unidentified foreign country. He is the first Iranian intellectual detained since Ahmadinejad became president.

The American Iranian Council registers its strongest protest against the detention of Dr. Jahanbegloo and urges the Iranian authorities to let him free immediately. We also urge that his detention for any length of time must accompany full disclosure of charges against him and any court proceedings against him must fully respect the due legal process including rights to full and open defense.

Senator J. Bennett Johnston: Co-Chairman, AIC

Senator J. Bennett Johnston’s public political career spanned 32 years, including eight years in the Louisiana Legislature and 24 years in the United States Senate.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources from its creation and as its Chairman and Ranking Member for much of that time, he was either directly or indirectly responsible for all energy legislation considered by the Congress between 1973 and 1996. He proposed and passed the first electricity restructuring legislation as part of the Energy Policy Act of 1992; that Act also contained extensive provisions regarding natural gas and re-wrote the nuclear licensing provisions of federal law.

    Tom & Katie’s Suri

On April 18, 2006, Tom Cruise and his fiancée Katie Holmes welcomed the arrival of their baby girl, Suri. Since the name was announced, it has become a hot topic. Tom announced that the name has Persian and Hebrew origins, where it means “red rose” and “princess” respectively. While the Hebrew origin of the name was disputed by some Israelis, the Persian origin of the name was commented on by Professor Amirahmadi in an interview with New York Daily. "In Farsi, it means red, like a fiery color, but there is no such a thing as a 'Suri' that means 'red rose,' I can promise you that," said Dr. Amirahmadi, AIC’s President. He added that the word also can mean "a party or celebration."
