| In the Name of the Iranian People - Regime Change or Regime Reform? |
 |
The Bush Administration has been without an Iran
policy since it took office in January 2000. The
containment policy it inherited from the Clinton
Administration was under review when the tragedy of
September 11 occurred. The US then drifted toward
the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and declared Iran
as belonging to an “Axis of Evil.” However, as Iran’s
nuclear crisis became more global, the Administration
refocused attention on Iran. The broad contours of
an Iran policy were outlined by Secretary
Condoleezza Rice and two senior officials of the
State Department on 15 February 2006. Dr. Rice
made her remarks at the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, and the officials briefed the media.

| American Dollars and Human Rights in Iran - Mehrangiz Kar |
 |
For 27 years, people of Iran have been suffering from
the tensions in the US-Iran relations, but the
embezzlers affiliated with the centers of power have
benefited from it. For 27 years, the Iranian
authorities have imposed a whole range of economic,
political, cultural and social restrictions on the people
and have justified their official repressions in the
name of fighting against international oppressors. For
years, the middlemen who manage the international
black market have been helping the Iranian
government to obtain the products it needs and sell
its own products.

| Ganji Is Released |
 |
The Iranian journalist, Akbar Ganji, was released on
March 18, 2006. Ganji was released early a
week to spend the Iranian New Year, Nowruz, with
his family.
Ganji, 46, served six years in prison beginning in
2000. He
was jailed for writing a book that accused
government officials, including former President
Hashemi Rafsanjani, for playing a role in killing the
intellectuals and writers.
Last summer, Ganji went on a long-term hunger strike
to force the Iranian government to release him. He
drew international attention causing the United
Nations and President Bush to issue calls for his
release. He ended his
strike due to the serious illness.

| Iran Looses Ali Tajvidi |
 |
This March, Iran lost one of its greatest music
figures,
Ali
Tajvidi, the violin master and music composer. The
American Iranian Council sends its condolences to
the family of the late Tajvidi and to all his friends and
admirers in Iran and throughout the world.
Tajvidi died at the age of 86 after suffering from
respiratory disease for 7 years. Tajvidi was born in
1919 in Tehran to an artistic family. His father, Hadi
Khan, was one of the founders of the miniature
painting
and a student of the prominent Iranian painter,
Kamalolmolk. Tajvidi learned the basics of music
from his father.
Tajvidi was only 10 years old when he started playing
under the supervision of the
Iranian music masters of the time. Later he practiced
violin with the guidance of the eminent Iranian
musicians such as Hossein Yahaggi and Abolhassan
Saba. He also mastered the European style of playing
violin. Tajvidi composed about 100 pieces. Some of
his memorable works are with the famous singer,
Delkash. In 2004, Tajvidi was honored by the
Islamic Republic of Iran.
