| Iran's Nuclear Predicament - Hooshang Amirahmadi |
 |
On 4 February 2006, at the end of a three-day
Special Session of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), which had been called for by
Germany, France and Britain (the so-called EU Trio),
its Board of Directors voted to “report” Iran to the
UN Security Council. Accordingly, the copy of a
special report which Dr. Mohammed ElBaradei, the
Director-General, will present to the Board at the
agency’s regular meeting on March 6, will also be
forwarded to the UN Security Council. Expectedly,
the Council will initially only “debate” Iran’s nuclear
dossier, may censure Iran, but will avoid imposing
sanctions on the country. Russians and Chinese are
not yet ready for sanctions, which will particularly
harm their vast economic interests in Iran (
AIC UPDATE No. 39).

IAEA Voted to Report Iran to the UN
Security
Council
On 4 February 4, 2006, the Board of Directors of the
International Atomic Energy Agency voted to report
Iran’s nuclear dossier to the United Nations Security
Council. The West has long feared that Tehran is
seeking to build nuclear weapons under the guise of
a civilian nuclear power program. Iran insists that it
wants power, not bombs. Concerns over Iran’s
intentions were heightened after Tehran said in
January that it would resume some nuclear
enrichment activities. The IAEA's resolution paves
the way for the UN Security Council to impose
sanctions on Iran. But it also postpones any UN
action by at least a month, as a result of a
compromise demanded by Russia and China, who had
previously been reluctant to refer Iran to the UN.

Violence Follows Insulting Cartoons of Prophet
Mohammad
After a long delay, religious Iranians reacted to the
insulting cartoons of Prophet Mohammad.
The Council of Ministers of the Arab League and the
Iranian Government said that the cartoons were an
insult to Islam. Islam forbids any depiction of Prophet
Muhammad or of Allah. Violent protests have erupted
throughout the Muslim world. Iran cut trade ties with
Denmark and Iranians pelted the Danish Embassy
with fire bombs and stones.

Massive Demonstrations are Planned for
Anniversary of the Islamic Revolution
February 11, 2006, equivalent to 22 Bahman, 1384 in
the Iranian calendar, is the anniversary of the 1979
Islamic Revolution. Each year the Iranian state
organizations hold celebrations on the occasion, and
some take part in street demonstrations to show
support for the Government. This year, the
anniversary coincides with the vote of the IAEA to
report Iran to the United Nations Security Council.
The Government has planned huge demonstration to
show the West that it has the backing of the
Iranians for its nuclear policy. The planned
demonstrations are expected to bring millions to the
streets throughout the country, Tehran in particular.

Mourning the Third Imam of Shia
The Shia Moslims throughout the world observe the
Month of Moharam as a Holy month. During this
month, the Third Imam, Hussein, along with 72
members of his family and followers, was martyred by
the Caliphate Moaveyeh in Karbala, Iraq. February 8-
9, 2006 is the martyrdom anniversary of Imam
Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. The
two days, which are called Ashoura and Tasoua, are
the Public Holidays and the Iranians commemorate
them by mourning and attending various religious
ceremonies.
