President Obama, Vice President Biden, Secretary Clinton, Senators and Representatives,
It is with grave concern that we observe the growing threat of a new U.S. war--this time against the people of Iran. Since the 1979 revolution in Iran, the U.S. government has employed a policy of sanctions, demonization, containment, and deterrence against Iran, which has impeded Iran’s right to development and brought great suffering to its people.
There was a glimmer of hope, when earlier in his presidency, President Obama tried to change course by openly offering to engage Iran, stressing “diplomacy without preconditions.” However, that attempt dissipated promptly and the national rhetoric today, advanced by war-mongers and special-interest groups in Washington, has brought us back to the same policy lines of the past, resulting in the implementation of the most stringent sanctions policy ever on Iran, while keeping ‘all options on the table’. Not only has this led to more suffering of Iranians, the U.S. can't afford a war of choice in Iran -- especially not one based on the same kind of sketchy intelligence and irresponsible saber rattling that led to the disastrous invasion of Iraq. We should pursue diplomatic initiatives and take the military attack off the table!
It is essential that all voices opposed to the devastation of a new war in the Middle East speak out now. We urge an immediate end to Washington's campaign of sanctions, threats of military action, covert operations that have contributed to the suffering and isolation of the people of Iran. We oppose any new U.S. aggression against Iran. We need peace more than ever and an end to policies that have led to the loss of thousands of innocent lives and trillions of dollars squandered on unjust wars. Give genuine diplomacy, void of threats and sabotage, a chance. Diplomacy is the only means to a sustainable Peace that would secure the security and stability of the region!
